Sunrise breakfast at the pool edge with limestone karsts, The Sunny Hill

Planning your stay

When to come

Seasons, seas and sunsets on Trang’s quiet coast.

The short answer

Any month for the hill. November to April for the islands.

Trang sits on the Andaman coast of southern Thailand, and its year follows the two monsoons. From November to April the north-east monsoon brings dry air, flat seas and the long clear evenings the hill is famous for. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings showers, bigger seas and a green, dramatic landscape — and a quieter, better-value coast. The Sunny Hill is open all year; what changes is which island days we can promise. One thing that never changes: the hill is one of the coolest spots in Thailand. The breeze across the open hillside keeps it 2–3 °C cooler than Trang town, and the sea breeze that picks up every afternoon takes the edge off the sun.

November to February — the classic season

The rains ease in November and by December the Andaman is glassy most mornings. Visibility on the reefs is at its best, Koh Rok and the outer islands reopen, dugong trips to Koh Libong run on flat water, and the sunsets from the pool are the ones in the photographs. Christmas and New Year are the busiest weeks of the year across Thailand; book those months early, ideally direct, so we can hold dates for you.

March and April — hot, still, quiet

The hottest months, with temperatures in the low to mid-thirties, but also the calmest seas and, from mid-March, thinner crowds as European holidays end. Long pool days, early island departures and late dinners on the deck suit the season. On the hill the heat is gentler than the numbers suggest: the hillside breeze and the afternoon sea wind keep the terraces comfortable while the town swelters. Mid-April brings Songkran, the Thai New Year — a water festival worth seeing in Trang town.

May to October — the green season

Showers arrive in May, usually as short, heavy bursts in the afternoon or overnight, with sunshine between. The hills turn a deeper green, the waterfalls inland run full, and rates are at their lowest. Koh Rok and Koh Haa close inside Mu Ko Lanta National Park from roughly mid-May to mid-October; the inner islands — Ngai, Mook, Kradan — stay reachable on calm days, and the concierge will tell you each evening what tomorrow’s sea allows. It is a wonderful time for the villa itself: chef dinners, spa rituals, the pool between showers, and the beach across the road at its wildest.

Month by month

  • January – February: driest, calmest, busiest. Underwater wedding at Koh Kradan mid-February.
  • March – April: hottest and stillest; excellent snorkelling; Songkran mid-April.
  • May – June: first rains, lush and quiet; outer islands closed, inner islands on calm days.
  • July – August: wettest stretch with sunny gaps; villa season — chef, spa, pools, inland trips to caves and waterfalls.
  • September – October: rains taper through October; the sea settles and rates stay low — a smart shoulder season.
  • November – December: the coast reopens, seas flatten, the season begins.
Whatever the month, our sunsets face west over the Andaman — the one appointment on the hill that never changes.

Seasons — quick answers

What is the best month to visit Trang?

For calm seas, clear water and every island open: December to March. For value, greener hills and dramatic skies with fewer people: May, June and October, when most days are still sunny between showers.

Is The Sunny Hill open in the rainy season?

Yes, all year. The villas, pools, chef and spa do not depend on the weather, and the beach across the road is at its most dramatic. Island days simply run on the calm days, which there are many of.

Which islands close in the monsoon?

The outer national-park islands — Koh Rok and Koh Haa — close from roughly mid-May to mid-October. The inner Trang islands (Koh Ngai, Koh Mook, Koh Kradan) remain reachable on calm days, and the concierge checks the sea every morning.

What is the weather like in Trang?

Tropical: warm all year, around 28–33°C by day. The dry north-east monsoon runs roughly November to April; the wetter south-west monsoon roughly May to October, with showers that usually pass within an hour or two.
