Koh Ngai
Barefoot, car-free and closest of all — the gentlest island day.
The easy one
Shallow, warm, quiet — and closest to the hill.
Koh Ngai (you will also see it written Koh Hai) is a small, jungle-backed island with a single long beach on its eastern shore and no roads at all. The water in front of the beach is knee- to waist-deep for a long way out, which makes it the natural first island for families, for guests who want to swim more than they snorkel, and for anyone who simply wants a day that asks nothing of them.
The day, from The Sunny Hill
Because the crossing is short, Koh Ngai works as a half day or a full one. Many guests leave mid-morning, snorkel the reef at the southern end of the beach, lunch at one of the resort restaurants on the sand, and are back on the hill by four for a swim in their own pool. Others combine it with Koh Waen and Koh Chueak on the way out and Koh Kradan on the way back, making a long, lazy loop of the inner islands.
What to expect
The beach is soft and pale, the shallows are clear enough to watch small fish around your ankles, and the reef at the southern tip — a short swim or a few minutes by boat — has healthy hard coral and plenty of life without strong currents. At low tide the water retreats a long way, exposing sandbars that children love and grown-ups photograph.
Koh Ngai is administratively part of Krabi province, but it belongs to the Trang archipelago in every practical sense and is reached from the Trang coast.
Koh Ngai — quick answers
Is Koh Ngai good for children?
It is the island we recommend first for families. The water off the main beach is shallow and calm, the sand is soft, the beach restaurants are relaxed, and the crossing from the coast below The Sunny Hill is one of the shortest.
How far is Koh Ngai from The Sunny Hill?
Just under nine nautical miles — around 30 to 40 minutes by private longtail from the pier near Pak Meng.
Can we stay for sunset?
Yes. Koh Ngai’s main beach faces east, so we usually suggest lunch and the afternoon there, then cruise back to be at your own pool for the sunset, which faces the right way.
